Description
The Japanese white pine, Pinus parviflora is one of the classic bonsai subjects in Japan.
This five needle pine is native of Japan and forms a small to medium sized tree in the wild. It was first introduced in to the UK, though not, of course, as a bonsai, in 1861 by plant collector John Veitch. It has been one of the main bonsai subjects imported into the UK from Japan for many years now and acclimatises well so long as it is given a bit of time to do so. It is known not to like the extended periods of rainfall that is sometimes a feature of UK weather making the use of a free draining growing medium vital.
This example of the species is certainly one of the best that we have had available here at Willowbog Bonsai. The level of maturity in the bonsai makes it probably specimen class. The tree was refined last year by well known Willowbog associate Cazbonsai. Together we took the decision to remove the two lowest branches as they had become overly long and heavy for the image which is graceful but at the same time powerful. Typically for the species it has been grown on J. black pine, P. thunbergii root stock which provides that really powerful base with heavy bark platelets, both characteristics of a very mature tree. All the branches are full pads of well arranged twigs with the typically neat needled of the species. The overall silhouette that Caz created is truly lovely and the result is a very showable bonsai. It has a height of 76cm. and the branching spreads to 62cm. That powerful base is a full 28cm. across at soil level, above that the trunk diam. is 9cm. The pot is a very good quality Japanese ceramic rectangle which suits the bonsai really well and measures 47x36x12cm. A bonsai worthy of most folks collections and one which, with price increases in Japan, exorbitant shipping costs and a moderate exchange rate, is going to be both difficult and expensive to import now and in the future.
