European larch or Larix decidua

The European larch or Larix decidua is not native but was first introduced to the UK in about 1620 and has been long planted as a commercial forestry tree. . It is a very hardy species with good bonsai characteristics. It grows very well in our climate and is quick to develop as bonsai, responding well to all bonsai techniques. . It is a type of tree where some deadwood is often appropriate to a design, it responds great to hard pruning and is quite straightforward to wire especially when done in the dormant period when needles are absent because it is one of the few deciduous conifers.

It is possible that this very nice shohin example may be the Hybrid larch but if so then all the above applies the same. This bonsai is well developed and already shows great characteristics of age from the curving tapering trunk with maturing bark to the strong branch structure with ramifications. Just above that interesting root spread the trunk measures 6cm. in diam. The bonsai is 29cm in height so taller than the normally accepted limit for shohin, nevertheless this tree is definitely in that size category !  The branching is 32cm. wide. It is potted in a nice quality hand-made round ceramic 18x5cm.  Could play an important role in any shohin composition.
