Description

The Common hawthorn, Crataegus monogyna, is one of the most suitable of our native tree species with which to do bonsai.

. Perfectly hardy and with growth characteristics that lend themselves to bonsai techniques. To achieve the most natural sorts of images it is certainly a good idea to keep wiring to a minimum and to use direction pruning as far as possible to get desired shapes. Trunks quickly exhibit the aged characteristics so desirable in bonsai.

Could you find a more ” natural ” looking Hawthorn image than this attractive little tree ?  It is in the shohin size category at a height of 20 cm. with a branch spread of 20 cm. Across the base the trunk has a diam. of 3 cm. The landscape effect is achieved by planting the tree on a Walsall Ceramics pottery slab that measures 35×18 cm. Currently there is a good balance between the foliage volume and the trunk and whilst it might be desirable to grow more fine twigs within that silhouette that balance should be maintained. A but of pruning to create a more windswept style could be an option.
