Chinese juniper, Juniperus chinensis,
The Chinese juniper, Juniperus chinensis, is one of the classic Japanese bonsai subjects. Very often created to highlight 3 main elements in the design, significant deadwood both in the form of shari on the trunk and jinned branches, prominent live vein displaying the characteristic chestnut red coloured bark and green foliage areas arranged to best give prominence to the other two elements. Of course, personal preference allows you to create a bonsai to your own taste which may or may not incorporate all or just some of the aforementioned features.
This is a nice part styled shohin example of the species. Clearly an import from Japan the foliage is quite dense and might benefit from a bit of a thin to reveal more of the structure. Whether deadwood features such as jin and shari are added is obviously a personal decision for any new owner. The tree is 25cm. high with branching spreading to 32cm. The trunk across the base is 3cm. in diam. The pot is a nice quality Japanese oval un-glazed ceramic 25x18x3cm. With a little refinement this can be a classic example of shohin juniper bonsai.
