The Chinese juniper, Juniperus chinensis, is one of the classic Japanese bonsai subjects.
It is very often created to highlight 3 main elements in the design, significant deadwood both in the form of shari on the trunk and jinned branches, prominent live vein displaying the characteristic chestnut red coloured bark and green foliage areas arranged to best give prominence to the other two elements. Of course, personal preference allows you to create a bonsai to your own taste which may or may not incorporate all or just some of the aforementioned features.
It is quite obvious that this chuhin example has not had much pruning done in recent years with the previous owner sadly experiencing ill health that precluded him for proper work on many of his bonsai. The bonsai will have been imported from Japan many years ago and exhibits many classic juniper characteristics. For example the trunk features a significant shari for a good part of it’s length. This tree can quickly and easily be brought back to something like it’s original shape with judicious pruning and wire application. The height is 40cm. and branch spread is 46cm. The trunk shows good movement and taper and has a basal diam. of 4cm. below which roots spread to 8cm. across. Lots of healthy foliage to work with. The very nice hand made Walsall Ceramic unglazed rectangle is 23x19x7cm.
