Blackthorn or Sloe, Prunus spinosa, is a native species with many excellent characteristics for bonsai creation. In the main examples of this tree as bonsai will have been originally created from wild collected raw material. Perhaps the most attractive feature is the often very prolific flowering which will sometimes be followed by the production of the fruits which give the tree the name Sloe. A particularly hardy species which, once established in a pot, is quite easy to grow and develop.
This particular example is a tall elegant tree which, as the pictures show, has a branch structure that is capable of supporting outstanding flowering. The tree is 68cm. in height with a branch spread of 62cm. Across the base the trunk measures 4cm. in diam. It is currently planted in a Chinese, unglazed, round drum pot that measures 28x7cm. Flowering bonsai will always be a valuable addition to any bonsai collection.
Please see recent photo of this bonsai as we re-potted it earlier this year into a Japanese glazed rectangle, the photo also shows the remarkable blossom this tree features.
