Title: Soil Science Question and Answer Session
Time: 11:00 am - 4:00 pm
This is a day that we hope will help us understand much more about what is going on inside our bonsai pots.
We are very fortunate to have Dr Maria Del Carmen Montero-Calasanz, a soil scientist at Newcastle University, come along to the nursery and help us to understand better the relationship between our growing medium and the tree roots. The day’s format will probably be a short lecture followed by a question and answer session. It may be possible to illustrate some points with the use of slides.
The sorts of questions we anticipate are for example, the action of soil bacteria on plant growth, the nature of our growing mediums and the part that particle size, porosity and PH. play in root growth. What soil mycorrhizal fungi actually do. That sort of thing. It should be noted that Doctor Carmen admits to having almost no knowledge or experience of bonsai, so the questions need to be more science related. If you would like to submit a question beforehand then please contact me, it is my intention to have a series of questions that I have edited and collated, available to present to Carmen well before the day to enable her to prepare and have an idea of the direction of our interest. The deadline for submitting questions to myself is July 4th.
If you would like to know more about Doctor Carmen’s area of expertise then please follow this link. But please DO NOT contact Carmen directly, any queries should be addressed to Willowbog at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 01434681217
We expect this to be a most informative day where we gain knowledge and insights that will help us to create better bonsai and perhaps to do that more quickly and easily. The cost of the day will be divided equally between those participating, Willowbog Bonsai will take no profit from the day and will provide everyone with refreshments and a snack lunch as usual.
